Have you tried with /dev/video instead of /dev/video0 ?

Do you have any other video devices loaded that may be causing a conflict ?

Use a live cd to run zoneminder on the laptop, pop it out next morning and boot into windows on the laptop.

Will take a bit of initial configuring, but once sorted should be reliable.

Possible solutions :-
- full disk
- no write permission in the build tree
- issuing more than one configure at the same time in the same build
