OK, Lee, I'll make a new thread... when I get a new camera, damn it! My Topica camera just blew up with smoke. It was working perfectly well, until yesterday, I just plugged it in exactly the same way I did a number of times before, then started ZM and there was no image, and then I heard a pop ...

cordel, I got it!!! :) it was way much easier than I thought. If did I only think of that before or paid more attention. I believe port 80 is being blocked by my ISP, as soon as I forwarded LAN port 80 to WAN port 81 - everything started working honky dory! And dyndns updates my router LAN address ...

cordel, You have no idea how grateful I will be if you could walk me through the setup. The only "problem" is the huge time difference between US and Australia. I'll try to catch up with you on MSN in a few days (we have a public holiday coming and I'm going away). Thanks heaps in advance. :D

Thank you, this is very informative. I think I'll just get a capture card and try it in my amd box. if it works - fine. if it doesn't, then I'll build and intel box.

Ah, issues with chipsets not CPUs make sense. Obviously you can only have an Intel chipset with an Intel CPU. Could you please tell me what VIA and nVidia chipsets you had troubles with? I'll try to avoid them if possible. And I stay clear off AMD/ATI chipsets no matter what. ZM is not written to ...

sorry, can't believe it. if you take the same peripheral chip, say nvidia nforce, and use it with AMD or Intel, it should make no difference, because it's not Intel which communicates with the capture card over PCI but nVidia. Same with AMD, VIA, SIS etc. I think hardware-wise there should be no ...

guys, what's so special about the Intel chips that AMD don't have? I've always used AMD and never had a problem. Please tell me, maybe you know something I don't. Thanks.

Building a powerful cheap fanless compact computer and with video surveillance turned out to be not as easy and straight forward as I thought. Well, it either powerful but with a fan, or it's less powerful but fanless, or it needs too much power, or it's more expensive than a mATX box. Having ...

James, how many cameras and fps did you run it at? what's your cpu freq? Did you run it with the xserver as well? Thank you. [edit] Well, I think I wanted too much from the via board, I won't push it too hard with mpeg, I'll make a dedicated home server + video surveillance box and a separate HTPC ...

I don't know if the livecd supports all VIA hardware (2/3D, Gb LAN, hardware mpeg etc.). The other reason is I also need an NFS file server on the same machine.

I read a lot about problems with VIA drivers, hardware mpeg decoding etc. But this particular Linux distro looks very promising: iMedia Embedded Linux - http://www.imedialinux.com/ http://imedialinux.com/files/iMediaLinuxDatasheet.pdf "Better mini-itx boards support. iMediaLinux has been tuned for ...

If I set it at say 2 fps for each camera, what would be the difference between a PV-143 (1 chip for 4 channels) and PV-149 (4 chips for 4 channels)? Any benefit in 4 chips at such low fps? The CPU will still have to process 6 fps total regardless of the number of chips, right? And what is your ...

Where can I get this one with Mandriva?

What do you think about Pluto and LinuxMCE platforms:

http://plutohome.com/index.php
http://linuxmce.com/

They look like they can do what ZM does plus much more incl. video surveillance and security.
