You cannot run this in live CD mode.. It will show the desktop all pretty and stuff, but it will be useless in live mode.. Nothing will work at all.. The live DVD is required to get the installer, and you will need to click the 3rd choice in the boot menu that says "Install WDE Zoneminder DVD to HDD ...

We got a new DVD built with 1.24.0 and the latest ffmpeg, and we also built a VPS template and have it running on our hosted VPS servers..

Debain Etch is going to need a whole bunch of dependencies to get zoneminder installed.. Been there... done that.. Try using ubuntu or kubuntu and you will have much better luck.. go look for 1.24 install DVD and you will find a free install on kubuntu 8.04.. It is not the latest 1.24.0 but it works ...
