cable lengths vs repeaters
apparently, "standard" cctv signal is 1volt peak-peak from the camera into 75ohm cable. two quick questions: 1. is it critical to terminate each end of the cable, like in the old 110-ohm rg58au coax networking days? 2. what is the approximate upper practical limit on the cam cable before image ...

WARNING WRONG PATH
That was the gist of two recent emails regarding using firewire for linux surveillance: Warning, wrong path! Seems there are definite issues with cable length and repeaters vs standard CCTV cams or even USB2. Also, apparently there is not yet (Nov 2005) a frame-capture driver that rips from /dev ...

no chance?
long shot, but there's no chance it's something to do w/ insufficient inodes or something similar/related ?

15 firewire cams @ 5fps each - NUTS ?!
we just picked up another potential new client. he wants 15 cameras capturing at 5 fps. i'm thinking 15 iSights at 320x240 split over 2 firewire busses, for a total video flow right around 30fps per bus at 1/4 the size of a normal, full-frame video feed. does this seem unreasonable? we got one ...

the SCALE is SO wrong
you know what's really funny about this DVR / digital cam stuff ? years ago, when scanners were new, and incredible. 300 dpi scanning, you know! -- remember that? and remember how the average person just didn't "get it" regarding how long it took to scan one page, and how much storage it consumed ...

1394 vs composite w/ 5 cams @ 5 fps
We're building a surveillance system w/ 5 cameras capturing 5fps each. We're considering using 1394 cams like the Fire-I, apple isight, or irez.com versus a system using traditional CCTV cams running into an 8 port capture card/s, like the spectra/8, LML, or equiv built on bt878 chipset. One goal is ...

what kind
what kind of drive was it that failed?
we have had _so_ many hard drive problems, we've probably, sadly, conservatively, lost man-decades due to those (collective drive makers) bastards.

um
the first problem with that would seem to be the reduced (compressed) quality of mpeg4 vs. plain/uncompressed jpeg "stills". second problem is it's still so much easier and standard to web-serve jpeg stills vs. any kind of stream. we're considering a 6 cam server, capturing each at 5fps, storing to ...
