hi,
you can start trouble shooting by reading the log files. Zoneminder log file usually stored in /tmp/zm*.log and also check /var/log/messages.

Just a question about the question you posted.
What problem does this cause aside from having exit status 255 and restarting something?
I mean does it cause any problem on front-end (frame capturing, web interface, etc.)

1.When you are in the filter window, select use filter to PurgeWhenFull,
2.click on save
3.another window pops up
4.enter a new name
5.put a check mark on automatically delete all matches
6.click save button at the buttom right hand corner of the window that appeared in step 3.
