Replying to my own post ...
I removed the following lines in /etc/sysctl.conf
kernel.shmall = 134217728
kernel.shmmax = 134217728
and the problem of system freezing has gone away. All is now normal while a ZoneMinder monitor is running.

SUSE10.0 uses php4.

SUSE10.1 uses php5.

So, when installing ZoneMinder on SUSE10.1 think php5 when you see a reference to php4.

FYI, attempting to build on SUSE10.1, make failed with the following:

zm_mpeg.cpp:88: error: cannot convert ‘AVCodecContext**’ to ‘AVCodecContext*’ in initialization
zm_mpeg.cpp:109: error: ‘struct AVCodecContext’ has no member named ‘frame_rate’

The ffmpeg patch in the wiki has fixed it.
