To answer my own question:
Save a new file /etc/modprobe.d/options -

#bttv card settings
options bttv card =77,77,77,77

also using the pv155 card uncheck V4L_MULTI_BUFFER in config.

Just up graded a working 1.23.2(7.10) version to Peter Howards 1.24.2 (9.04) and I seem to have lost the /etc/modprobe.d/options file to insert my bttv card figures, do I just create a file 'options'. I have the box back at the creator! and it certainly has hard drive issues. So I will be putting a much bigger HD this time as 250GB wasn't big enough.

I have the same issue,I have installed using Peter's debs, I have used the above fix sudo chown www-data.www-data /usr/share/zoneminder/temp , but I am still getting the first posters error, can anyone explain how I softlink the files ? Thank you for your replies,
after adding a monitor you will need to restart zm
Also 2 may not be 2, so enable and restart and put the cam on all inputs checking for image
This was the issue, 2 wasn't 2, this has drove me mad for days...

As I read in the forum, the readme.txt instructions start to make sense when you begin to understand Zoneminder, and this is very true.

Just go step by step and things begin to become clear...
