id like to try and get the image replya working - I dont envisage storing a large amount of data ( or if i did I'd move the DB to another machine)

Does this disk space explain the lack of images ?

Ive assumed ( an very little knowledge) its to do with processing the graphics files

I had broken images problem in spite of chmodding 777 . I added my user to the video group and it worked . No idea why

ive manually added user apache to the video group and my picture has come back ! Must be a gentoo thing - theres a similar problem and solution with gentoo on this forum.
