My advice would be not to. Wait until Zoneminder v1.25.0 appears in an Ubuntu repository and use that version. I am currently having *huge* problems trying to compile zone minder from source on Ubuntu (as are others, particularly with ffmpeg support) and no clear answer has been forthcoming so far ...

Hmmm... Debian doesn't have a bzip2-devel package.... I tried rebuilding ffmpeg with --enable-gpl --enable-swscale --enable-bzlib without success, so I tried downloading bzip2-devel-1.0.5-1.fc9.i386.rpm and converting it to a .deb using alien. Still no joy... I realise this is over the boundary into ...

Yes, the libs seem to be where you suggest, but configuring with --with-ffmpeg=/usr/share still gives the same problem as before (identical build error).

I downloaded ffmpeg-0.5 source from ffmpeg.org. Would this install headers aswell? If not, where should I look, as they aren't mentioned on the ffmpeg.org download page?

Problems solved by uninstalling Debian rpm and compiling source code instead. I'll post the problem on the Debian build website in case it helps.

I'm using Debian 2.6.16.35 and zoneminder 1.22.3 - the version which is packaged as a Debian download.

It's a generic DVR card I bought on ebay! It works fine with xawtv, and as zoneminder says it's capturing, I'm assuming its producing images ok.
When you say 'force the driver' which one(s) might have died to give the apache error?
