Constant errors in the logs

[rand]

I'm seeing a lot of errors in the logs while I am trying to debug my setup. Is this type of thing normal? I'm missing events and trying to figure out who to blame. I installed using the wiki instructions on a debian virtual machine with 8 cpus, 16gb of ram, and 9 1080p axis IP cameras streaming at 10fps. All motion detection is being done by the cameras themselves. The first 2 snippets show services constantly restarting, the last is a chunk of the full log.

First off you should let Zoneminder do the motion detection. 16GB of RAM seems enough but with 9 HD cameras you could still have a tmpfs issue. Also run mysqltuner on your database server to see if you need to allocate more resources. I'm also not a fan of running Zoneminder in a VM or container. While I wrote the WIKI install for Debian I am not too sure that all is right with Zoneminder on Debian. I have not run the Debian install in a while but will load up my test machine and see what happens.

How do I check to see if I have a tmpfs issue? top is reporting just over half my memory is available. Switching it out of a VM is not currently an option. The zm server is also the database server.

As for motion detection, I decided to let the cameras do it to take the load off the server. They seem to do a better job of it than ZM anyway. I no longer get events from rain falling, or changes in lighting. These cameras are about $700 each, so I am assuming their motion detection is pretty good. I use UDP events to tell ZM when to start and stop recording.

The Debian 9 install instructions are OK. Upgraded my "server" to Debian 9.3 before installing Zoneminder.

As for the tmpfs check the upper right of the ZM console. Shows the space used in /dev/shm

When it doesn't see motion, it sends a stop event every 120 seconds. That way if ZM misses the first stop event for some reason, I won't end up with it recording for hours until it runs out of disk space.

As I understand the way Zoneminder works it pulls images from the camera, compares areas in the sequential image stream and triggers an "alarm" based on changes (blobs or pixels). Your idea of sending images sounds like a good way to save processing power but...

Try setting the cameras to produce a steady stream of images (turn off the in camera processing) and see if the errors in Zoneminder go away.

I'm sure the developers will be interested in what you have tried. However, not many of our users have $700.00 cameras... most admit to using cheap Chinese knocks offs. I'm still using an Axis web cam that was made in 1998 and still works on Zoneminder at the blazing rate of 1 FPS. Half of the cameras on my warehouse system are Linksys web cams with the rest old Foscam and Vivotek. The resolution isn't great and the speed works for security. We are not making HD videos... just preventing theft.

The cameras are in nodect mode. My understanding is that ZM is constantly grabbing images from the cameras in that mode so that when an event occurs, it already has a second or two of the video feed. That way you don't miss the beginning of a motion event. The camera isn't sending images to ZM, ZM accesses the stream. Which it can do at any time. The camera just sends a UDP trigger to ZM to tell it to start recording from the stream, that's all.

Good news! I think I have figured it out. When I added the monitors to ZM, I used the ONVIF (whatever that means) detection thing. ZM set the cameras up with a url that looks like the following:

rtsp://user:pass@address/onvif-media/media.amp?profile=profile_1_jpeg&sessiontimeout=60&streamtype=unicast

With some googling and trial and error, I changed it to the following:
rtsp://user:pass@address/axis-media/media.amp?profile=profile_1_jpeg&streamtype=unicast

The key is changing onvif-media to axis-media. I restarted zoneminder and the errors stopped immediately. It also seems to have halved my cpu load and zmtrigger is no longer failing to find a camera during an event due to zmc being crashed. I don't know if this was causing my original problem or not, time will tell. Should I file a bug report about this? I don't know if the problem is ZM crashing when it uses the onvif url, or if it shouldn't be using that url in the first place.
