Opinions on my crusty old laptop please

Post by paulgault »

Hi,

I've got an old Dell Latitude D430 laptop that I've brought back out of retirement. I've installed Debian 9 (Stretch) and ZM v1.32.3. I'm using it to test and get used to ZM.
Laptop really is old! It has a dual core Intel CPU, 1.33 GHz, 2 gig of ram (maxed out) and a small SSD. More details on the hardware below.
For now I'm just using it as I have it. This is only going to be used for 2 (maybe 3 at most) cameras. I've seen other posts where people are saying that old hardware can be OK but I'm thinking surely there are limits to that!!!
I'm just after peoples opinions about if this too under powered and old. Has anyone else tried such a low spec'd machine as this for a 2 camera system? How did it go? Any budget friendly recommendations about what I could use instead? any and all comment welcomed.

A core2duo should be able to handle 2-3 cameras. If you find performance slowing, try lowering resolution or FPS of cameras on their configuration webpage (don't set max FPS on ZM).

2-3 at 720p will be no problem. 2-3 at 4K will be impossible.

Thank you very much for replying. I have been trying different settings in the camera and ZM and it seems to work just fine at a lower fps. thanks.
