newbie - How should I archive old events?

Post by majik-br »

Hi there.

This is my first post.

First off I'm a new zoneminder user and found installation to be "doable". Not easy, but not impossible. Installed with ffmpeg support on SuSE 9.3. Just needed a few minor modifications on /etc/rc.d/zm script.

So ... I'm running 4 cameras 24/7 and my 40gb hd easily goes 100%. How should I proceed then? How do I archive old events, the OFFICIAL way ... Can I save them as videos to save up some space? Is there any easy way to automate this procedure (i.e. when disk space reaches 95%, archive all and upload them to my other server ....)

By the way, what should be good values for image quality (defaults are 70/70).

Other than that I must say I'm more than satisfied switching my expensive and crappy AVerMedia windows board to a generic bt878 board and zoneminder ...

Thanks in advance,
Bruno - Sao Paulo, Brazil.

a couple of questions, what res you capturing at and at what framerate?
What mode you capturing, record , modect etc

You can set up the purge when full auto filter in filters to automagicaly delete the oldest items when the disk is 99% full.

I personally dont like changing event to mpg and deleting the jpegs as had disks arnt exactly expensive, but it can be done. You can alos upload events to an ftp server, maybe you have a nas drive or an old server with hd to spare

40 Gig isnt much available space as your var will probably be about 35 Gb available which could fill up very quick.
I have a test machine with 600Gb of sapce and 3 cams and im can fill it in 2 days if i leave everything at max.

Hi James ... thanks for the fast reply !!

4 color ccd cameras running at 320x240. I'm not sure about the framerate since I let every value on defaults.

I'm running then on MODETECT, which is almost every time since this is a business with lots of people ... (also one of them is on the street which captures traffic all day long).

tks,
Bruno
