I use the API - with a json on or off - to enable recording and disable. My concern is for whatever reason the recording I start does not get turned off - did not receive the json OFF request, etc. Is there some way that I can set a max recording time? Or is there someway when I tell the camera to turn on I can pass how long I want it to stay on. Thanks for any suggestions...

Perhaps Options->Config->EVENT_CLOSE_MODE applies?
