Login Status/Limit/logging

Post by rosendo.laboy »

It would be nice if somehow could have a status page for the admin logon to see which users are currently connected to zoneminder site. This would be nice for people that have multiple user names set up to monitor how many connections are currently in the system. As well as a user log to store date/ time a user logged in and what ip (got that idea from Ruler)

It would also be nice to set a limit on how many users at a time can be logged in.

i think you can limit the number of concurrent connectios in apache's conf file. i think the default is 255 qhich would nail all zm's i think. I think logins would already be logged somewhere due to apache but im not sure. Would be nice but not sure how much work it would be over how much use it would be?

It would be of alot of use for several reasons.
1. Limit would avoid machine from recieving to many connections that it can handle and avoid crash.
2. Logger would show if the machine is being tamperred with (ie. someone viewing when they really are not supposed to at that time.
3. Status would allow administrator to see who is on at the moment.

Now thinking also to add a admin logout boot, meaning administrator could boot a user off them sytem temporary while he makes changes.

You could have this ability now by installing webmin on the machine. I have started working on a ZM module for webmin that has very limited ability now. Once I get ta chance to sitdown and learn a bit of cgi scripting it will do alot more.

I would also like to see a detailed log of each users activity kept in the database.

I would like to be able to see When a particular user logged in and what they did while logged in (what events were viewed, any option edits, deletions, etc.) This would uncover an employee deleting events of himself in the wrong place and the wrong time using a stolen managers password. It would show who's username/paswword had been comprimised.

This feature could provide the basis for an optional "Who's logged in" addition to the top of the mail screen for Administrators to see who is logged in live.

Good thoughts, But i never give a user an account high enough to be able to delete events. There is no valid reason usually that they should need this. Just my thoughts

I am planning to put user login/logout events into ZM, maybe even by the next release (though often people don't logout per se, they just close a browser). However I think logging everything someone does might be a bit overkill, however I will have a think about it.

Phil, did you ever get anywhere with this? Its something that I've thought would be handy to be able to see who is logged into your system.

Thanks!

I have started working on this but not on the main development tree yet. I need to be very sure it doesn't break anything and everything to do with events needs to be changed so it's not a minor mod. It is definitely necessary though.

I'd love to see this feature also. Webmin would be cool, but just logging the user activity in a database or text file would be quite useful.

Thanks,

Scott
