Sorry for coming back so late in the thread.
You should have checked your /etc/inittab file to see that these lines was correct.
id:5:initdefault:
x:5:respawn:/etc/X11/prefdm -nodaemon
The first line is found towards the begining and tells the system to boot to run level 5.
the second lind is towards the end of the file and tells the system at run level five to start the desktop.
Regards,
Cordel
Boots to black - my fault probably.

Thanx
Thank you for all the help!
I checked the init file and the first line is there, but the second one is not, yet everything is working OK, so I'm going to assume that it's alright, having been rewritten by the LiveCD installation scripts.
And, I'm going to not mess with it again

Lines
There were some lines like it, so I left it alone.
Today it still works, so I think I outsmarted myself by not sticking my finger back in the socket
It ain't the computer I'm worried about running out of magic smoke, it's me that's low ! I think the computer knows what it's doing, it's me that has a learning curve to go through.
It makes it a damn sight better to have a forum like this to ask questions on! Thanks for all your help everyone
