It's not obvious from the process listing what might be taking up the processor. There should be an entry that sorts it by cpu which might make things clearer.

Also, if you have phpmyadmin on there there is a 'status' listing which has lots of useful information and details on how to configure mysql for better performance, e.g. increasing key_buffer size to that disk inices are kept in memory and not read from disk. It may be that your performance issues arise once the existing limits are exceeded and then it all starts to build up as everything starts taking longer.

ill put php my admin on it, but i have noticed the load is still high and the db is (now) virtually empty. Im thinking the only thing doing any work at the moment (that wasnt before the disk filled) is zmaudit, but just a theory i have no proof as such. I think im gonna remove this machine and build another, with ctu as pclinux os may have something wierd in it causing this

Ok. You might want to try and gets some benchmarks for performance before it starts going bad so there is something to compare against.

well it normally has about 20% idle and a load of 1-2 now it has 0.2% idle and a load of 20 lol

Phil a little update on this, i think the problem is related to zm4ms, as it really increases the load. I have another test site that is virtually constantly in alarm, and when in the larger views the load hits 4 or 5 with about 12% proc idle time. When the filter run (i see mysqld take all thats available in top for about 30 secs) it really struggles.
Is this related to the fact that im requesting full jpegs from the server, and im guessing this raw thing will barly add any load at all to the server.

Im not requesting multiple images now, as a single camera will not request a new image until the previous image has completed downloading. The only exception to this is force refresh that refreshes the window regardless of a previous succes or failure (in case it fails ever etc). Im thinking that as when in 4 way view the load is 0.2 - 0.3 but when in 9 way the load is 3-4 that something wierd is happerning somewhere. Also when in 9 way mode it requestes images every second as opposed to every 1/2 second when in 4 way mode. Does zms not like having loads of requestes for different images from the same source etc. The reason i ask it really doesnt like suppying the same image twice.

also i have tried changing the path to zms from nph-zms and this seems a lot better. It seems to use the same processor amount but the load drops so i assume it working faster etc, what are the differnces between zms and nph-zms

The zms and nph-zms processes both do exactly the same thing and produce the same output. The difference is that calling something nph is a clue to apache to not parse the output headers and muck around with them (nph = non parsed headers) or insert it's own. So nph should be quicker if any of them are.

Hi.

A little off-topic, if the nph-zms is faster, why it isn't used as standard? Because of some incompatibility problems?

phil you menetioned it taking longer to find somewhere to put the files on a large array, an i defrag the drive. From what i understand, linux didnt need to as it stored things properly unlike ms. (not my opion just what i read)

A bit of historical inertia mostly, but also partly because nph-zms bypasses the web server and I figured this might cause issues for some peoples setups. It doesn't appear to have done so and from 1.22.0 it is the default.

It's not really a question of defragmenting. It's really just a question of having to keep track of more files in general. The main impact is on the database which maintains indexes to all the frames, and the index and database files are all single files themselves which take longer to read and write as more stuff is stored in them.

looks like this was me, been to the system today and rebooted it, whilst rebotting it made the startup post beep. But it was a long as an old 486 in non turbo mode, chnged the mem timings as it was wierd to 1:1 and its flying again. rather than 0.2% idle and huge loads, it running at 40% idle and loads of 2-4 (with zm4ms running on 3 clients)
