Hello all--
i am new here. Well, kindof. I have now set up a working zoneminder pc on mandriva 2006, building everything from source except for Cambozola and a couple of other select items. I am using the 315 dollar with shipping gadspot ak-16's (7 of them presently, and soon to be 9) to monitor a corporate environment (cherry packing house).
we have a very slow internet connection (256k upload), but if anyone would like to root around and see what is set up, please email me. I have a temporary account set up for some friends to check it out....
I am also a relative Linux newb... have had some experience in the past, but not much
The reason i say i am kindof new, is because for the last week while i was setting up the server, i was searching these forums a lot for answers-- and finding a lot of answers about where to look for errors, etc. so..
THANK YOU to EVERYONE that takes the time to answer posts, for your patience, caring, time, etc. And even more thanks to Phil for making ZM!!! and giving me an excuse to get linux experience on the clock .
This helped me track down all of the running problems (mostly .so locations, and the memory issue in the FAQ) except one::
It seems that the permissions change randomly on all of the files i have in my cgi-bin directory. The executable flag gets removed from them.
This causes streaming to cambozola not to work, until i do a chmod on all of the files in the directory to once again allow excecution(the directory itself doesn't have this issue- only the files in the directory) .
WAIT!
OK, i just Found the problem-- it was logged in the messages log-- hadn't ever caught it there before...
For those of you using Mandrake or Mandriva, this will be a problem, depending on your msec settings (mandriva security)
here is an excerp from the log:
hmmm as i am on a windows box ssh'ing into the vi, i'm not sure how to do this, so i will type it verbatum:
(Date) (Host Name) msec: changed mode of /var/log/cgihome/zms from 740 to 640
it does this for several directories.
I will be moving the location of zoneminder, i believe, to a newer/larger drive which may solve some of this problme (is it stemming from my entire ZM install being in the /var/log directory?)
any thoughts?
thanks to everyone again!
Camden

Hi Camden,
The best I can tell (via a bit of googling) msec -> mandriva-security is changing you file permisions and is the root of your issue. Unfortunatly I don't have any Mandriva machines here installed so can't be of much more help. Here is the link I found for referance:
http://club.mandriva.com/xwiki/bin/KB/SecureSmsec
This should help get you going the right direction.
The other thing you might try is moving the file from /var/log/cgihome/zms (since it's under var/log is most likely changing to what the logs should be) to /var/www/cgi-bin/zm.
Then in options -> paths change ZM_PATH_ZMS to reflect it's location ( /cgi-bin/zm/zms ). This way it should allow the files to be executable.
Regards,
Corey

Hey there, Corey
Thanks for replying!
I just finished moving the ZM install--
Due to drive setup, i have a symolic link from my apache install dir, and for some dumb reason when in installed ZM, i used the static path rather than the symb link, so i had to recompile... AND my dumb-*** managed to instal ZM to the wrong directory/partition (DOH__ small log partition isntead of large storage partition on /var)
Now that the events are housed in a different location, everything is cool!
For other mandrake/mandriva users, there are docs on your computer that show what each setting does, as well as defaults for certain folders. these filenames are given in the manual pages for msec (man msec).
Everyone-- thanks again for the help!
take care

Lol-- surprised you didn't blink and miss us!
Not much of a town.. although i'm trying to get a job with Google, as they are opening shop here....
What on earth are you going to Madras for? I was just looking at some property there, but it's too far from TD to commute dailey (well, at least my opinion:) )
