Pixart Webcam

Post by AusIV »

Hi, I've recently installed ZM on an Ubuntu machine. I've ordered a video card for some more serious cameras, but right now I'm trying to get a Pixart webcam to work with zoneminder. I've had no trouble getting it to work with xwatv, however I have been unsuccessful getting anything out of it from Zoneminder.

First, I'm not certain I have the video source correct. I've tried /dev/video0, /dev/video1 (both show up upon running ls -l /dev/video*), but neither seems to be recognized by ZM. I've also tried PAC207BCA, which is what xawtv says is the video source, but that didn't work (not that I expected it to). Can anyone tell me how to determine the name of my video source?

Additionally, I've heard of other people having problems installing ZM on Ubuntu. It seems to be installed just fine as far as I can tell, but I thought I'd check and see if anyone has successfully installed ZM on ubuntu.

-Edit-
I'm runing zoneminder 1.21.4.

What is the full configuration that you have set in zm for your web cam?
You make no mention of setting the channel, have you tried setting it to 0 (zero)?

I have tried the device Channel as 0, and I've tried the format as both 0 and 1. I have the capture pallete set to grey, the width is 320 and the height is 240. Orientation is normal.

I don't know what other information may be helpful, but I'll be happy to provide any information that may be useful.

Thanks.

-Update-
As it turns out I hadn't added the startup script properly, so the daemon wasn't running. At this point zmc seems to be running, however I still get no image in the monitor. It says it is idle and varies between 8 and 10 FPS, but there is no picture. I don't know whether this will simplify things or complicate them, but I figure nobody can give me any help without this informaiton.

Sorry, for the late response, I've been doing a fair bit of traveling lately.
If zm is reporting an FPS > 0 then it is able to talk to a device (a good thing).
Check your logs zmdc.log and /var/log/messages for anything relevant and post a snip here.
If you find nothing in those logs check apaches error.log.

Turns zms was in the wrong directory. Now I'm getting a streaming image, but it's bizarre looking. The image seems extremely zoomed in, and it seems like there are multiple images crammed into the same spot. I think I saw something about this when I was searching the forums earlier, so I'll do some more searching.

Thanks for all the help.

This is what the picture looks like, if it helps anybody:

As you can see my eye appears right on top of my ear.
