Samba File Sharing - 98 and NT OK, 95 not

Post by Ruler »

I was wondering if anybody here has experience with Samba. I've got it configured via WebMin and all is well, until I try to access a shared resource from a 95 box. I've googled for it, but haven't found anything. While 95 is obsolete, there are still a few machines around and I'm in the process of developing something that will need to map a network drive to a shared directory on the server. I'm running Slackware 10.1 with the version of samba that installed with it.

Any ideas?

I don't know if it's relevant but I remember there's something about the different versions of windows and whether they send encrypted or plaintext passwords. Before version X they couldn't use encrypted, which I think is the Samba default.

It might be worth googling for, or just switch off encrypted passwords and see if your 965 box can then connect.

Hey Phill and Ruler

You are right Phill, all the old windows systems (Win 95, Win 95 osr2, Win 98, Win 98 SE, Cant remember more atm.) dont use encrypted password, they all use plaintext password, and that is the main problem, and as far as i can remember you can not run both on the same samba box, but if you have the SWAT application installed alog with your samba, you can log into that from Webmin, it has an extensive help section along with it, that will lessen your googeling.

The reason the win 98 works, hmmm as far as i remember there is some setting in 98 to telle it to use encrypted insted, and as far as i remember that is not in the 95.

Thanks for the tips guys - I'll try changing that setting in samba and see what happens. I don't know what I'll do if both can't access simultaneously though... damn M$ sucks!
