Assuming they are composite video type cams and not IP cameras then you should get something almost straight away. You may have to fiddle with the image size (remember to restart ZM if you increase this) and the formats etc to get it right but provided your card is correctly configured it shouldn't be that hard. I have had a bit of a long day and was being a bit negative, sorry abou that

THANKS!

I didn't think you were negative at all. Besides we are all allowed to have bad days. Hope things go a bit better for you.

I'll play with this thing some more.

Frank,

This is where my usefuness ends. I only have Network (IP) cameras, so I don't have any experience troubelshooting this type of issue.

I'll keep my eye on this thread however..

good luck.

WAM,

Don't know if you have any ideas on this one. It appears that when I engage ZM it starts generating these errors.

Is it possible that these errors are due to the fact that I have not been successful at adding a monitor (cam)?

I'm currently testing this theory by having DELETED my one /dev/video0 AND stopping ZM. So far so good.

Should I reinstall ZM?

IS there andother issue with ZM?

thanks
-frank

ok...I performed a simple test by REMOVING my /dev/video0 in ZM and have ZM running.

I am monitoring the logs for any crashes and they are GONE!!!

So it appears that when I configure the monitor incorrectly ZM crashes my entire system!!!

see below

Taking your log out of order, I would focus for a moment on this :
ERR [Can't get shared memory id '7a6d2001', 1: No such file or directory]
I am not sure that this is ALL that is going on, but is is one importany piece. Not sure if you are not seeing any, or just not enough.

How much RAM does you system have, and how much shared memory are you allocating...?

Maybe look in /proc/sys/kernel/shmmax and maybe shmmni

Some folks here recomend 1/2 RAM. I would start with 132 Meg or so and then see where things are. Note, the size of the ring buffer, the bit depth of the monitor, and the image size all have a direct bearing on the Shared Memory required to run.

Note the above settings are not perminent. Might have to Google Shared Memory to get a proceedure for your dist. You can also search these forums for Smred Memory. You find lots and lots.

After your shared memory is covered, use ipcs as root to ensure the ZM is getting what it needs.

The I would try again and see that the log reports then.

Let me know.

You know...that does make total sense now. Thanks for looking over my logs! I'll have to deal with this because I get NO image whatever. :(

My system does have 1GB SDRAM...should be plenty but I'm sure it is allocated incorrectly.

I'll dig into this tonight when I get back home.

thanks much

I used the settings you see below and it still had no video and it crashed my system too.

Do you know what I should set it to?

Dealing with the Shared Memory problem
just add the following lines to your /etc/sysctl.conf file:
Code:
kernel.shmall = 134217728
kernel.shmmax = 134217728

I got this feedback from the LINUXMEDIALABS guys who design and sell the LMLBT44 video capture card:

>>the numbers are fine - its 134 Mb on 1 Gb RAM. But it seems to me
>>something else is wrong. First, you have 1Gb, that is high memory
>>configuration. That configuration may be less tested then conventional
>>Linux 800+ Mb configuration. System should not lock - it may not capture
>>video etc., but hanging is a sign of some other problem. V4L drivers are
>>quite stable and should not cause hangs themselfs.

So he doesn't see an issue but then the question is what does that memory error really mean...

If you are worried about shared memory then the best thing to do is go right down with your image size and and buffer size. Say 320x240 and an image buffer size of 20. Everyone should have enough shared memory configured by default to see something with that config.

As with all shared mem changes, it's best to restart ZM after each mod.

WAM,

Could you take a look at my other thread:

http://www.zoneminder.com/forums/viewto ... 8823#18823

Even after setting the shared memory, rebooting my machine, and stopping then starting ZM, I'm not able to "see" anything from the cam /dev/video0.

ALll this seems completely bizarre to me because I don't see anyone other than me with this problem...

thanks
