change function automatically (newbie question)

Hi!

a have the next situation:

from 20:00 to 08:00 i need to set function to "modetect"
from 08:00 to 21:00 i need to set function to "monitor"

there is a way to do that automatically?
eventually from command line (bash), if i don`t ask too much..

if necessary:
ZM Release 1.22.1
OS CentOS 4.3
Kernel 2.6.9-34.EL

search for run states and cron and you will find plenty
