zoneminder on ubuntu dapper?

Post by rjewell »

I've experimented with the mandrake based livecd installs and I'm interested in adding zoneminder to my ubuntu server. I'm a newbie and hoping the group can help me decide on the easiest/best approach. I've read a number of old conversations on the topic and have failed the install a few times now. It seems like there are different docs I could follow and I'm hoping someone will point me to the best one (zoneminder manual, debian install doc). Any other tips are appreciated.

Thanks

I would love a ubuntu server install, but got tripped up early on due to lack of linux knowledge :-(

Something as idiot-proof as Ross' LiveCD or a step-by-step would be extremely appreciated!

Happy to road test anything anyone's created!

I haven't even really got that far... I am planning on trying to setup from the zm manual again to see if I can get the rest working (get to the point where ffmpeg is my only problem). I will try to keep notes in case I'm successful. I've seen various people have this working... I hope they drop into help.

Use the README and the forum search. I was able to get it going on ubuntu using those. The thing that tripped me up the longest was the modprobe stuff and I updated the wiki with that info. Hopefully that'll work for you.

In my opinion, it would probably help a lot of newbies if the wiki was reorganised, but almost all the info you need is in the README. Just read the whole thing. for a readme, it's a bit long, but it has good info.

:) just made it run off dapper 5 minz ago, building FFmpeg and adding the extralibs tag fixes all in ubuntu. my personal recomendation, don't use apt-get for libavcodec, libavformat and ffmpeg
just apt the ogg,vorbis,dc1394 and theora libs and build ffmpeg from svn

I think I got it working also but I haven't had time to test an actual camera on the system.

Is there a chance you could add links to the documents that describe your recommended steps? Or maybe just a description...

I think you said you would work off the main zm readme... did you also use another resource? Could we ammend the wiki (still haven't found that) with the extra steps? :)

I used a combination of approaches over the last week. Since a lot of this is new to me I'm not even sure I know where various pieces came from. For instance, the extra libs (ogg, vorbis, etc) all have a version number in the name... Also, I still haven't read the modprobe stuff another person talked about.

Thanks,
Ryan

ok, here's what i did:

from a fresh install of Ubuntu dapper 6.06 (desktop) installed Xampp (www.apachefriends.org)

downloaded ffmpeg svn and folowed

http://www.ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=170488

that guide

about building it

followed the install guide there about building ZM, as for options added the extralibs as stated in the previous urls (i suggest looking for the 4 libs by hand, as names might vary a little)

and after a few apt's for perl modules ZM compiled succesfully

=) hope that helpz

Not to toot my own horn, but I managed to get ZM working on Ubuntu 6.06 without recompling anything (except ZoneMinder, of course ;)) Here are a couple of urls:

http://www.zoneminder.com/forums/viewtopic.php?t=5576
http://www.ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=194700

I've got more complete documentation in a private wiki. I'll be making that public once I pull out a few details like passwords (and get some sleep!)

I'm not sure that I've got everything working yet. for example, I can't export events for some reason, and I can't do MPEG encoding even though there are no complaints about ffmpeg. (Maybe this means I didn't get it working after all.)
