6 USB CAMS - Where to start?

Post here to ask any questions about hardware suitability, configuration in ZoneMinder, or experiences. If you just want to know if something works with ZoneMinder or not, please check the Hardware Compatibility sections in the forum, and the Wiki first. Also search this topic as well.

6 USB CAMS - Where to start?

Post by dm »

Reading in the manual, it states:

o USB bus problems. If you have multiple USB cameras on one bus then it can appear as if ZoneMinder is causing your cameras to fail. This is because the bandwidth available to cameras is limited by the fairly low USB speed. In order to use more than one USB camera with ZoneMinder (or any application) you will need to inform the driver that there are other cameras requiring bandwidth. This is usually done with a simple module option. Examples are usb_alt=<n> for the OV511 driver and cams=<n> for CPIA etc. Check your driver documentation for more details. Be aware however that sharing cameras in this way on one bus will also limit the capture rate due to the reduced bandwidth.

My case in testing momentarily is multiple USB cameras connected to a d-link High Speed USB Hub. All devices are connected to Mandrake Live Installation. Hardware all displays as being recognized, machine was rebooted to scan the USB Bus.

All devices show black images

14. USB_4 None /dev/video (4) 0 0 0 0 0 0 1
15. USB_5 None /dev/video (5) 0 0 0 0 0 0 1

In reading the above documentation, where do I start? How do I get these USB Cameras to become recognized? Only 1 USB Camera will work. Most are Quick Cams, One is a Konica / Intel Create n Share. I have toyed with the video configuration presets and get nothing but broken images, with the exception of YUV420P for (1) QC 4000.

I'd really like to see if I can get all of these cameras working.. I just need a little bit of help.

Thanks..
