Using zmTrigger with LiveCD

I'm trying to trigger events from my video server using zmtrigger.pl, but I can't work out how to open a port to send the message.

I've tried telnet and redirecting from the commandline to /dev/tcp/localhost/6802, but keep getting "connection refused".

I've turned off the linux firewall, shorewall. Do I need to modify the IPtables? If so, how do I go about that?
