Axis cameras

Post by amerdsp »

Greetings,
I keep finding out that the Axis camera provide good image quality and enough resolution to perform face identification. However, they are on the pricey side. Is there another brand with comparable image quality but cheaper? What do people think about DLink cameras? Or any other good quality cameras for that matter?

Best,

A

I have found d-Link to be a bit hit and miss. I quite like the Panasonic ones but there are plenty of others that have been discussed here and on the Wiki. I think the GadSpot ones have come over quite well.

dLink bad. Linksys worse. Generic risky.

The problem with most of the cheaper end of the IP market is they don't use mjpeg, and ZM doesn't support mpeg. More than type of camera says it does and doesn't (Linksys has broken mjpeg streams that need activeX wrappers to work).

Rule of thumb, avoid any camera that "requires Internet Explorer" as it probably means hacked up clientside software to view the stream. I second the vote for Gadspot, seems to be the best value around atm. They're reliable and work with ZM.

You get what you pay for. Trouble is, not enough IP cameras are being sold to bring the price down to what the public has become to expect with other types of computer hardware. You can buy a complete modern PC for around £200-250, which is cheaper than most of Axis's range for a few bits of pressed plastic, a tiny lens and a PCB...
