Channel modulation and slow computers?

Channel modulation and slow computers?

Post by cbarr »

I have 2 questions that I was unable to find answers for on the site.

1. Does zoneminder support video that has been modulated on certain channels? Say for example I have 2 cameras and modulate each of them over channel 3 and channel 4. Can zoneminder see these, or would I have to run each camera directly into the capture card?

2. How fast of a computer would I need to run this? I have an old 233Mhz Pentium II and a slightly newer 500Mhz Pentium III as well. Would either of these run the software well, or would I have to upgrade?

Thanks for all the help ahead of time, I really can't wait to get this installed and working!

if you have card with twin tuners then possibly but you would need a tuner per modulated signal or send video to 2 inputs

your 500 meg will just about do you. I run my 2 cams at home on a 750 Mhz duron. oc'ed to 833. And run at low load if you stay a 2-3 fps per cam and use record only you should be ok

well if i have to plug in 2 wires either way I might as well just not buy modulators and skip that complication.

Glad to know the 500Mhz machine will work with it. i think it has a dead hard drive, so I suppose I'll just use the LiveCD option and store my data on a USB stick or something (this is possible, right? - I haven't looked into the LiveCD stuff much yet.).

if you could mount the usb stick it would be possible but it wont give you much storage and you would have to remaster the cd for this application. Id just buy a 80 gig hd.

I agree the tuners are over complicated

Is 500Mhz P-III not fast enough to do motion detection?

it will struggle mate. It might as its a p3 but lower the frame rate agian. Just try it and see, like i said i use a duron with 768 meg of ram, but 256 will just about do. run at 320x240 at 1 fps and motion detect should be ok, but i have never tried on anything lower than mine

Well I am trying to run at 2-3 fps but I am getting error messages with exit code 255 I wander if it's the timing reason that CPU can't handle it fast enough?

i would say not. I would suggest your card hasnt been properly detected. What card are you using what cam etc. First you need to get an image running via xawtv or tvtime, Then get it running with zm

Well motion detection isn't a huge thing for me, but that would be nice. i guess I'll just have to see if it works once I get it up and running.

I found a spare ATI Rage 128 capture card, but I see it's not listed in the wiki - should I just put it back or is it worth looking into. If not, what is the recommended card to get? I am only looking for 2 inputs, possibly 3 in the future at the most.

I am running a wireless network card. So, I don't think card detection can be an issue here.

sorry i have just noticed you are 2 different people.

svadu, whare are your images coming from as it appears you have a capture problem and if so i would start a new thread or join a more relevant one.

cbarr, i would think we could get an ati card working but alas i have never tried. There are plenty of cheap 4 way cards available on the net but bear in mind your running below minimum specs really
