Zoneminder on a minimum configuration for standalone server

Is anyone using Zoneminder on a very minimal linux installation as a dedicated system?

I'd like to set up an OS that has no GUI, and only the necessary services running to handle full ZM operation, and allow for administration via SSH.

The problem is, I'm not good enough with Linux to know how to set everything up manually. I've been using the Live CD up until now, and everything was fine until I went to upgrade to the newer Live CD version. It works fine for the most part, but is too slow on the Duron 1200 system I'm using. And after having problems with my previously good 1.21.3 installation CD several times for some reason, I decided it might be a good time to start fresh.

Basically I'm just wondering if there is a tutorial anywhere for installing Zoneminder on something minimal, partly for installation speed, and also to make the system more responsive. Any recommended Linux distributions to start with?

It's a step by step how to on installing Debian along with ZoneMinder. It's a very minimal install too.

if u don't need ffmpeg, I just updated my guide (basic,no gui,stable)...

its a much quicker (although not as comprehensive) guide as the previous post...so basic debian knowledge is recommended.
