Getting ZoneMinder into debian and ubuntu

If you've made a patch to quick fix a bug or to add a new feature not yet in the main tree then post it here so others can try it out.

sorry

Post by rjewell »

I figured out I was wrong but thought I would hold off on posting a correction because I imagined I would be wrong about more of what I said (that I need to think more before posting). I finally realized I had the script 'zoneminder' (I was using 'zm' before). This may have caused some problems last time around because I was controlling the package with 'zm' script from a previous install.

I still need to test and see if everything is working. The package installed and I could monitor cameras.

Thanks!

still problem viewing events

Post by rjewell »

I doubt this is a problem with the ubuntu package but I was hoping for general ideas.

I am able to monitor cameras and in modect zm is recording events and some have motion. If I try to view an event or an image I get nothing.

I can see the events in the db and directories for them on the hd but no files within.

In the error logs I haven't found the source of the problem but I did see errors that processes couldn't open /usr/share/zoneminder/events/1/178/001-capture.jpg etc. (I don't see any files in those dirs).

I verified those dirs (ln to /var/cache/zoneminder) belong to www-data and I chmod'd to 777 as a test. I also freed up space on the hd and have 40GB free.

Thanks in advance,
Ryan

fixed

OK, I removed the package again. Scanned the entire drive for zm, zoneminder etc and deleted all of that. Reinstalled and everything works. I think there were more left overs from past installs.

Thanks for all of the support. A wonderful app and package!

Video Not Appearing

Post by jdblank »

I installed the Ubuntu 6.06 desktop edition and was able to get the zoneminder console to come up by following this thread. However, the camera is not appearing. I just see a broken image in firefox.

Any suggestions would be appreciated.

BTW - I know the camera works because I also have the LiveCD version so i can make sure the hardware is functioning and it is.

Which version of Apache is running? One explanation is that, even though you've got Apache2 installed, Apache1 is getting started instead.

OK I am running Apache 2

So that is not the problem.

On my first attempt to install i was blocked because ffmpeg was not installed so I did an apt-get and installed it and then installed zoneminder no problem.

Any help troubleshooting would be appreciated.

The next thing to do is go through the system log and check what the various programs (zma, zmc, etc) are doing. Hopefully there's going to be a useful error message in there.

a little more feedback

Post by rjewell »

Hi again.

I have been messing with this on and off over the last few days. I have a little more feedback.

I had the problem where video0 properties were messed up. This thread had the fix.
http://www.zoneminder.com/forums/viewtopic.php?t=8621

When I installed an axis 214 at 640x480 I had to follow the instructions to increase the shared memory. I can find the link I followed if its useful info (editing a kernel config shmmax etc). Anyway, the machine would crash after 45 minutes. I couldn't find a reason for the crash in a standard log file. I repaired the above, reduced the mem and the crash is gone.

I hope this helps. Thanks for taking the time to create this package and make my life a lot easier!

Reviewing the logs like Peter mentioned should help. I've found there are a number of reasons why a camera might not run (the camera profile displays red when there is a problem with its settings).

Anyway, you might check the thread I referenced and the video0 problem. If you are using the same rev as me this would definitely prevent you from viewing video. This problem did show up in the error log for me.

Ok here is some info from the syslog. Not sure if it is useful.

If anyone might be available to chat via skype and help me troubleshoot I would be happy to pay for your time...

Check your permisions for both of these files.
Your video dev should also be /dev/video0
zmfix should be rwsr_xr_x

Can you explain what you mean by dev/video should by dev/video0?

All the permissions seem OK but I am not 100%

I think he's just removing one possibility (rather than a certainty) but . . .

/dev/video0 is the "real" device. /dev/video, if it exists, will be a link to /dev/video0
