Questions concerning email notifications

I've been trying for a month to configure ZM to send email notifications with no success.
I have SENDMAIL installed and working when I test it in the terminal window. But I can´t make ZM trigger any events to send mails. I´ve already configured the email TAB in the Options window and nothing.
Can anyone help me with instructions to configure email notifications?
Is it better to use SMTP? If yes, how?
Is it easier do send SMS? If yes, how?
Having SENDMAIL installed isn´t enough to make it work? Do I have to configure anything else?
Do email notifications depend on filters?

if your sendmail can send email then its probably a config in zm issue, ie people tend to delete the info in the boxes but it is needed. But id bet yuour send mail is misconfigured and cannot actually send mail, whats in your logs

P.S - When I write at the terminal: sendmail mymail@gmail.com and period after the message, I get the email instantly.

Looks like it never sends. Not sure if I got the ZM URL right, my machine is not accessible from outside the internal network if that matters. I just put http://localhost/zm/zm.php, is that right? I do get the ZM main screen when I use that, but is that what the e-mail settings needs/wants?

Any ideas on how to troubleshoot?
