8 channel 240 FPS card on EBAY...almost working

Post by dbraeckel »

Okay everyone, I am in need of some of your help.

Some of you have gotten this card to work, and am hoping with your guidance I can get mine to work as well. I have tried everything I can think of but am still getting blue screens with it, which is good, but bad....

Here's the story. I took a running FC6 system with a single chip 4-port card (card=77) that was working perfectly fine and switched to an 8 port, 8 chip, 240fps card I bought on EBay, I mentioned in a previous post.

The original setup was working flawlessly, and the original card was $6 from EBay and was a BT878 based Chinese special.

I did the card swap after building a 2nd machine with FC7 and following the how-to guide and ending up with blue screens. I thought "hey, take a setup that is known to work and change the modprobe.conf around a little big and boom!" Bzzzzztttt wrong answer....

I have tried tuner=4, radio=-1, gbuffers-16, card=102......, card=77......, card=0, etc., etc,etc.

Please help a brother out...I am no Linux guru, but a slight dabbler for years.

Here is a link to what that card looks like

My booting does hang for a while, like what others have posted, but I didn't see that the i2c stuff did much for me....

Any help you guys can offer would be amazingly appreciated!

Thanks,

Doug

The only thing I did to make it work was the in my options file.

Code: Select all

options i2c_algo_bit bit_test=1
options bttv gbuffers=16 radio=-1 tuner=4 card=102,102,102,102,102,102,102,102
Then configure /dev/video0 to /dev/video7 for capture. Make sure permissions are set for the new devices.

After a side by side test again, i2c_algo_bit does make the system boot much, much more quickly. I didn't know it was udev that suffered, but that is where mine hangs w/o i2c added.

I tried your setup exactly Lee, and I still get blue screens, on both systems, which really confuses the heck out of me considering the results you have had. I wouldn't think the card is broken, but I don't know how else to test it.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but I shouldn't need to delete my old setup in ZM for each device and recreate new monitors to the new card's devices should I? I have a couple of complicated zones in my two existing monitors and it would be a shame to have to try to recreate those.

Maybe port "1", isn't really port "1" on this card...? Hmmmm.

First, you are correct that port 1 is not port 1. At least on the ones we get the cables are marked backwards. I think it is because westerners read left to right, and the Chinese read right to left.

Anyway, you should not need to delete the existing cams. However, start with xawtv, and point it directly to video0 and so on. Make sure you are getting picture. You may need to set zmfix to run as root and allow zm to read the video ports. 'ls -lah /dev/vid*' to check.

Lee, Thanks, I got it working!

Once I figured out it is really a Kodicom 8800 (clone?), based on the vendor number from scanpci, I found in the forums http://www.zoneminder.com/forums/viewto ... ht=kodicom
where Cordel was discussing channel (0) on video0 and so on.

I finally figured out that I was only getting the first channel of the first chip by default, and all the other devices were really just channels on the first chip, all of which are not accessible but the first.

Then I realized that you have to force ZM to see the first channel on the different devices:

/dev/video0 (0)
/dev/video1 (0)
.
.
.
/dev/video7 (0)

It all came together and started working. xawtv was a life saver too.

Thank you for the help.

Say, what resolutions and frame rates are you able to get out of your card?

Thanks again,

Doug

I only capture 320 x 240. I don't like interlaced pictures... :) So I never tried anything else.
