Stand alone network dvr through Linux to web?

I have a CCTV DVR, with network capability, hooked upto my TV and I would like to make the streams available over the internet with some passworded access. I run Linux Debian with a separate router/switch. What would be the simplest way to achieve this in terms of basic concepts?

Well, since you can't get in the box, the router will have to be your gateway. I would use VPN at the router.
