More bounce in California?

A very off topic request here.

I am thinking of going to California with my family for a holiday/vacation this summer as we haven't been before and have stayed close to home for the last few years. As we have people on here from all over the world I though I would ask and see if anyone from USA West has any recommendations of places to go and things to do.

We are thinking we would probably be mostly in the South of the state (around the Los Angeles/San Diego bit) but are also thinking of perhaps taking a side trip to Las Vegas or the canyon etc and maybe up to San Francisco. However we are on a pretty tight budget so can't really afford anywhere too upmarket. It would be in August if that makes any difference.

All tips and advice welcome. We know about Sea World and SD Zoo and that kind of thing but are looking for stuff you might not hear about and definitely for ideas for good places to stay etc. Rather than clutter up the forum too much feel free to pm or email me directly unless it's something you think everyone would benefit from.

I'm on the east coast, but took a trip to Cali many years ago. I'd suggest visiting the redwood forest while your there, its an experience.
