Help a newbie choosing distro, version

Hi guys, I am new to zoneminder and this whole CFTV stuff.

I need some advice on the best method to get a system up and running with minimal fuss.
I've read the forums and the wiki. I'd like to use Mandriva if possible, but I am willing to try Ubuntu or anything tha works. I guess the easiest way would be using the liveCD (based on Mandriva 2007), but I had the same error this guy had. Something to do with the SATA controller.

So basically I am wondering:
- which version of zoneminder should I use? I want maximum stability/ease of use/easy install, not necessarily more features.
-which distro I should use? I'd like to install from a package/repository, but if there is a trustworthy method to build from source I'd be willing to give it a try.
From what I gather there is neither an RPM for Mandriva or a deb for Ubuntu 7. Will I have any problems if I use Ubuntu 6 with an older version of ZM?

I moved to Mandriva after having some problems with Ubuntu and ZM generating video.

Search the Wiki for Mandriva, basic principles for 2007 also applies to 2008.

There's also an article for 2008 (in French, but translates OK using Google translate)

If you do not want to build from source, ZM 1.23.0 RPM for Mandriva 2008 can be found from the link on the page here. http://www.zoneminder.com/wiki/index.php/ZMliveCD

Thanks! I guess that settles it then. Are you using Mandrake One? Did you stumbled upon any troubles/bugs in the installation and use of ZM 1.23.0?

No, I am using Mandriva 2008.0 Free DVD. (I suppose you could use One, not really had time to experiment with it though)

I just ran the default install (custom partitioning though, automatic partitioning does a weird split) and selected the GNOME desktop as I prefer GNOME over KDE.

First thing to do after install, disable the DVD as a source for install packages,
go to http://easyurpmi.zarb.org/ and select sources for urpmi closest to you. I selected all (13 in total)

From there on in it was pretty straight forward just following the instructions on the Wiki.

PS. There is one gotcha, but i think that has also been mentioned in a previous post. In your shutdown or reboot sequence, you need to make sure that MySQL stops after ZM. By default MySQL stops before ZM, then when ZM shuts down, it tries to write to MySQL, but can't because it has already stopped.

Well, I installed Mandriva One today. It doesn't seem to come with a lot of needed packages like apache and mysql, so I'll have some downloading to do in order to install the base packets. Perhaps I should have taken the time to dload Mandriva Free after all... I intend to make a small tutorial either here or in the wiki once I get this to work.

An old redneck phrase... "Every dog has it's fleas." The Ubuntu / Debian version still has a few bugs, but once they work out, it will be the easiest version for a totally new to Linux user. Now, however, there really is no easy way to get the current version up and fully functional. They all take some work.

Well, everything went fine. In fact, I just installed the needed packages, I guess about 300MB of rpms, and after that everything worked as expected. I might post a tutorial about installing using Mandriva One but I am not even sure it is needed.

I've been trying to set up a ZM system for a month or so now and have been having a lotta trouble with it. I decided to try a whole new distro in hopes that it fixes the problem. I was using Ubuntu and followed all the steps listed in the faq to get it working, but I still have trouble ( IP cams work fine, but I can only get video0 channel0 analogue cam to work on a 16 port card that is supposed to be supported by ZM and is properly detected by Ubuntu ).

Anyway, I just installed Mandriva One and really am stumbling through everything here. I know very little about linux so its even more difficult to get it going. I'm currently stuck on trying to get the packages I need in order to compile ZM ( the errors give me no clue, and for some reason when i select g++ in the package manager it simply says it cant be installed. i dont even know if i need g++ im just guessing here... )

So, I, at least, would find some use from a simple guide to getting ZM working in Mandriva.

Well, I installed it from an RPM. It seems there is not anything extraordinary needed to compile ZM under Mandriva, but Mandriva One doesn't come with any development tools whatsoever. Even make is missing from a fresh install. So, considering you said you know very little about linux, you might try that route, it's bound to be easier. The RPM looked pretty stable to me. If you plan to install it from source anyways, I'd advise getting Mandrake Free DVD and installing all dev tools beforehand.

welp its just one problem after another for me... i got mandrake free and it doesnt have the proper drivers for the sata chipset, so it doesnt detect hard drives or the cd drive (even though its reading from it lol). madriva one works, so im trying to get all the dev stuff installed with mandriva. *sigh* the linuxes. they hate me.

at least mandriva one properly detects the capture card. i sucessfully viewed a vid stream with some built in tv viewer app. I wasnt able to view any more than 2 of the streams.
