ZoneMinder 1.22.3 problem: No picture

Clean installation of Kubuntu 8.04 and ZoneMinder 1.22.3.

Can see pictures using webcam-server.

No picture when using ZoneMinder.

Weird entries in /var/log/messages:
Jun 3 12:57:27 gan-desktop zmwatch[12390]: INF [Restarting capture daemon for cam2, shared memory not valid]
Jun 3 12:57:28 gan-desktop zmdc[14982]: INF ['zmc -d /dev/video' started at 08/06/03 12:57:28]

Jun 3 12:57:28 gan-desktop zmdc[12361]: INF [Can't find child with pid of '14982']

I found on my ubuntu system that if I use xawtv and view the cameras and then try them in zoneminder they don't work.
However, if I do a clean reboot, then load zoneminder, I can get zoneminder to show the images.
