Limited number of events in ID

Post by jniffen »

We have ZoneMinder 1.23 installed on Suse 10.3.

All the drives has been formatted with ext3, except the swap file of course..

The system has been set in Modect for all 16 cameras.

The problem that has arisen is the first ID will stop recording when the number of events reaches 31998. The viewing window has new and recent events but there is no file associated with it. I've checked in the directory where the images are located but there is no file.

If I delete files associated with that camera, it will start recording.
Also Zoneminder says only 20% of the drive is used, and the other camera are able to record to their directories without issues.

Any suggestions would be appreciated.

I don't know the exact directory size limit, but this could be a problem I once ran into. I had my events cranked up to be REALLY, REALLY long, so the day for one cam would be one event. Apparently that was a bad idea. It made if from 6am-4:20pm and stopped working, because the directory structure couldn't handle any more files.

If that's the case, it should be solved by the "USE_DEEP_STORAGE" option in your ZM settings. Word of warning if you're going to do this, you should purge all existing events if you can first, turn off the server, turn on the option, then turn it back on.

(P.S.; I still vote Reiserfs)

[Edit: If you're going to go this route (and lose all your events as the below poster points out), between turning off ZM and checking the option, run "zmfilter.pl", as it doesn't seem to know how to get rid of old events once you've switched styles]

Ext3 is limited to 32k files/folder per directory.
If you switch to deep storage, you will lose all your previous events, so backup what you want if you switch the storage structure.
The other option is to backup the partition and reformat it to rieser or xfs since the limits for this filesystems are much higher.

Can Zone Minder be set so the Modect will record a minimum time.

Some recordings are only 1 second.

I'd like to see 60 seconds or more.

I'll also think of reformatting the partition either xfs or rieser.

Luckily, we are in evaluation stage of this system.
So if I have to rebuild it, it's not the end.

Thanks for replying, it's amazing on other Linux 'products' that questions are never answered, or there person asking the question is challenged on their skills.

you can strech out events easily by changing buffer sizes.
I have a few cams in very busy 24/7 hallways that were maxing out the 32K limit, and I changed the buffers on those monitors as follows:

Image buffer size 80
warmup frames 25
pre event 10
post event 60

This will help link events together.
