Ive read much on adding a hard drive and now IM SCARED!

Post here to ask any questions about hardware suitability, configuration in ZoneMinder, or experiences. If you just want to know if something works with ZoneMinder or not, please check the Hardware Compatibility sections in the forum, and the Wiki first. Also search this topic as well.

Hiya guys i figured since ive go the box out on the desk for maintenance so why not add a few hundred gigs right. Well i read all the lil walkthroughs on here (thanks cordel&kev&others) also read up on LVM and Group Clustering. now I just got the box back to life (power outage DB & .dmrc crash) and am quite afraid to try some of those since this was a custom build on kubuntu and I've always had issues when I change anything on the box :(
.. OK now the point lol can we make a definitive guide for us noobz with a better handle on which options or methods to add space we have. Also i guess this should go over to feature reqz thread but I wonder if we can implement something into ZM for adding HDD or NAS whatever support as needs grow

It's pretty simple actually *.
  • 1 Setup the new drive how you want (LVM, RAID, the file system you want, etc.) and create a mount point in fstab for it.
  • 2 Stop ZoneMinder (Do not start ZM again untill your finished and verify everything is working)
  • 3 Move the events folder to the point you want on the new drive.
  • 4 Create a symlink in place of the events folder you just moved to the new location and verify the apache configuration so that at least that directory has the directive to followsymlinks. Restart apache if you changed apache config.
  • 5 Open up the ZoneMinder web console and verify that you can see your still images and stream images through zms. If any of this fails, go back to line 4 and figure out what is not working (permissions maybe).
  • 6 Start ZoneMinder (only once your sure everything is working or all your events will be lost.
[*]Disclaimer: Always backup your events and database before making any changes, including backup any config files before editing blah blah blah.
