I am using 16 Vivotek IP7131 cameras without big stability / etc issues.
The only problem is that, like others said, you have to view the cameras using jpeg capture (http://ip.add.re.ss/cgi-bin/video.jpg) and as such, frame rates are variable, between 1 and 4 FPS (never higher).
Load is kind of high.
Server has two quad-core (8 cores total) Xeons with 8GB RAM
Intel Xeon CPU X5355 @ 2.66GHz

Here are the settings for our cameras:

Hope this helps,

So to do the math, You have 16 cams, running at 640x480, all using modect, at an average of maybe 3 fps using jpeg snap shots from the cam's. More or less thinking out loud ;)

 When using snap shots ZM has to send a request for each image to be captured. Unlike Mjpeg where there is only one initial request and the cam pushes the images.

 Running larger sizes increase the work needed to be done by zma by factor of 2 from 320x240.

 16 cams x 3fps is 48 fps your processing at 640x480 with motion detection.

So One question that interests me is what frame rate can you get from one of those cameras alone at 640x480 which is what you are running as well as what can you get with it set to 320x240 on ZM without any other cameras running?

With all cams running:
What specifically are your loads in top for the Apache processes?

What returns from zmu -l or zmu -l -U<user> -P<password> if you have authentication turned on?
