Bandwidth requirments for remote recording

Post by slaterm61 »

Hi,
I am contemplating setting up 4-5 axis i.p cameras at a remote location, and hosting the server elswhere. My question relates to the Bandwidth required to be able to do continious recording of the remote cameras.

Currently it is planned to set up a 2mbit radio link between sites, and i need to know if a 2 mbit link is sufficient.

The resolution of the cameras needs to be such, that we can zoom in on a car and read license plate numbers.

Does anyone here have any experience with such a setup ?

it will be easy to calculate.
Take an image and look at the file size. say 50k
Then multiple that by framerate say 5 fps
then multiple by the number of cameras say 5

50 x 5 = 250k
250 x 5 = 1250k

2 mbit link gives approx 200k so...

no

Is black and white an option? That should cut your bandwidth by 3, and a plate should (depending on the state, customization) be as easily read in color or b/w.

2mbit link? what tech are you using? there are much faster options out there.

i have an axis camera that is over 2000 feet from my house, and have a wifi link from the house to the building, and run an axis camera at 640x480 @ 5fps all day long.

you can do a 5.8 p2p wifi link, and get close to 54mbps thruput.

what is the distance between your two sites?
1km? 10km? 70km?

You should give 1.24 a try. JPEG / MJPEG is a bandwidth hog...switching to MPEG4 would save on bandwidth
