lower quality video captures with v4l2?

lower quality video captures with v4l2?
I have noticed that if I run v4l2 instead of v4l1 the video is lower quality...almost looks like interlaced video at 320x240. If I switch back to vfl1 in the 'source' tab all is good. Anyone else have the same issue? I can post more details on request..
