linux crashing - $500 bounty!

This is killer software and I'm more than willing to make a significant donation to the author if someone can help me get it up and running on my machine. The problem I'm having is that my system just crashes hard and reboots (no panic/debug info on console) a few minutes after I start zoneminder. My video card is the spectra8 and I did the install myself starting from Mandrake 10.0 (did not use LiveCD). The system is perfectly stable when zm is not running.

I've read through many of the threads here, and have tried all of the following:

- Tried two different motherboards. First was an Asus P4. On this system the crashes would happen after approx 15-30 minutes. I figured it was probably bad hardware and I didn't worry about it because I had planned to use a faster SMP machine. So I got this dual opeteron board (Master2 K8T) and I am still seeing the problem. Except on this motherboard it crashes faster - about 30 sec to 1 minute after starting zoneminder.

- I've run memtest86 for over 24 hours with no errors. The machine has 1GB registered memory.

- I've tried upgrading to linux v 2.6.8 and also downgrading to 2.4.27. The system crashes in the same way with either of these kernels, as well as the stock 2.6.3-7mdk kernel.

- Tried adding append="noapic pci=noacpi" to lilo.conf. Made no difference in the crashing except that with these options turned on it printed a message about "disabling irq 12" when I started zoneminder.

- I have tried disabling the bios setting to "assign IRQ to VGA card". Did not make any difference.

- I've googled, I've read the forums, I've whacked my head against the keyboard but I'm getting nowhere here. Please help!!!

I'm a software/hardware guy, and more than willing to do a reasonable amount of troubleshooting, but will need some guidance as I don't know diddly about how to debug kernel crashes like this.

Addenda:

1) After deleting my second camera, the system no longer crashes.

2) However, I am also not getting any video now. Perhaps I b0rked something while I was flipping kernel revs back and forth?

xawtv just shows a black screen. when starting xawtv I get this in /var/log/messages:

bttv0: reset, initialize

One more little update and then I have to go to bed:

after taking noapic and pci=noacpi out of my lilo.conf, I *almost* get video again. Shows VERY briefly in xawtv, and it's all corrupted - mostly black with a few lines of garbage across the top.

So the problem does not seem to be specific to zoneminder. I now get the crash within just 2-3 seconds or so if I just run xawtv.

And zoneminder still gives the error about shmem not initialized by capture daemon - there's no video in zm now.

Since you started crashing quicker with a faster system, my guess is that there is something stomping on the driver data used by the bttv( since ZM and xawtv both crash it ). Pulling out any non-essential kernel modules would be where I'd start.

But, if you have an open partition, why not try installing from the LiveCD and see if that too bombs out. If it doesn't, then you might look at the modules being loaded in your manual installation and drop out the ones not needed to run video and go from there.

Thanks Doug. Now I'm trying to install the livecd and I'm getting an oops just after swap is activated.

I won't retype all the trace info unless it's needed, but it appears to be in kobject_register, inside bus_add_driver.

After the Oops, it prints

...and then it hangs there.

One thing that was interesting is while it was hung on this screen, my VGA timing wigged out a bit for a few minutes as I was typing this message, then it stabilized again.

I tried diabling the bios settings "assign IRQ for VGA" as suggested in another thread, and also "assign IRQ for USB". Still the same Oops.

yea, there are some people using Knoppix who also have/had SCSI booting problems. You still can't beat a SCSI bus IMO but it appears to be somewhat problematic at device detection time.

Hopefully, the LiveCD build will shed some light on your manual build...

And BTW, it's a small world. In one of your last replies, there was a SIG mentioning the SlimDevice. I'm they "Doug" who put you in touch with the plastics guys back when you were case-less. From the EE-Times article, it looks like things are going well for the project. Congratulations.

LiveCD installed an booted okay but appears to have the same problem as my 10.0-based install.

If I doubleclick the tvtime icon on the desktop, a black window appears for a 1/10 sec and then goes away.

If I run xawtv, there is a bunch of garbage lines across the screen (not even in a window) and then the system reboots.

hmmm, well, the next thing I would shoot for is removing the bttv driver and capture card from the system and see if a USBcam will also cause the problem. Granted, it would likely use the CPIA drivers but it would still be exercising the graphics system. And you still get to fiddle with ZoneMinder with the USBcam device.

If the USBcam causes the problem too, then it could be a graphics driver issue. If it's not the problem then it's going to be the bttv stuff and we'll have to start looking at all the bttv driver options.

From your first post, I notice that one of your bt878's is sharing IRQ-5 with your Mobo sound card. I'd try to clear this or atleast try one of the middle ports/channels( 1 or 2 ) since I'm not sure what IRQ channel 0 would be( 5 or 12 ).

I noticed in your original post that you had 1GB of memory on your machine, but only seemed to be mounting 500MB of swap. I could be wrong there. If it is the case, you might try upiing your swap partition to 2-3GB as a start, and then perhaps increasing shmmax depending on what its set at currently. You might also try dropping your physical memory just in case mandrake is having any troubles addressing 1GB.

Ive installed LiveCD with 256MB and 394MB RAM using around 800MB - 1000MB swap with no probs. I usually allocate swap at a rate of 2.5 - 3 times physical memory.

btw - I also needed to use the NOUSB switch in conjunction with NOSCSI when I installed LiveCD.

I tried swapping out the vga card, and now the system does not crash when I run xawtv.

It is trying to display some kind of video signal but it's all mangled in the window... a bunch of flickering lines acting like they're out off sync or misaligned in memory. it is definitely some sort of signal from the camera because it responds to light/dark when I move the camera, and the window turns blue when I unplug the camera.

Same thing happens with both my livecd-based setup and my 10.0 installation. What really odd here is that I'm basically back to my original setup (same kernel etc) where the card was once almost working (albeit with crashes).

I called iTuner support and they didn't have any ideas. So I'm driving up to Fremont now to get the card replaced. The card is the ONLY common denominator in all of these different setups I've tried.

good to hear you got it down to just a junky video output. It sounds alot like what I was getting with they cheapo HarborFreight camera I've been messing with. I can now get an image from Xawtv but I think it only started working after I ran "mplayer /dev/video0" to see if it would display the video stream. When I killed xmplayer, xawtv changed how it displayed the video and I tweaked the brightness and contrast to see my night vision B/W image. I still can't get ZM to display the video but I had thought the camera was bad before this.

I had checked out my KWorld capture card( one bt878 w/four ports ) by connecting the VideoOut signal from a VGA->TV(RCA) converter to cards inputs one at a time. I saw blue in ZM and then I saw my servers display in ZM.

Once you get your new card, if the same video is displayed, it's probably a setting or two that's causing the problem. I know that I had to specify the H and V size exactly before getting the signal to stop rolling and stabilize.

I also used the STOP and START link on the ZM console to switch between using the desktop TVTime or xawtv applications and ZM.

I replaced the spectra8 and now suddenly I am getting beautiful full motion color video in xawtv, with no more crashes (so far).

Still no signal in ZM yet but I think that's a simpler matter so I'm going to fiddle around a bit more...
