Problem with new TrendNet TVIP201 camera

Post here to ask any questions about hardware suitability, configuration in ZoneMinder, or experiences. If you just want to know if something works with ZoneMinder or not, please check the Hardware Compatibility sections in the forum, and the Wiki first. Also search this topic as well.

Regarding the TVIP201W

Post by larrylamb »

I have not tried the wireless version of this camera. I have used a TVIP200W once and it worked the same as a I recall. That said, I am not certain as to what part is not working for you. Are you able to set up the camera, but simply cannot get the image into zoneminder? I know that the path is still /goform/capture as I set up a TVIP201 camera on Friday and will be configuring 12 more today. Also, I am using the older 1.22.3 version of zoneminder because that remains the default package in Synaptic of Ubuntu 7.10 32 and 64 bit. The posted error seems to point to a "shared memory" error which I think is unrelated to the camera itself. Oddly, there are oher postings that mention shared memory errors with Ubuntu 8.04. I have been installing the older 7.10 and the applying the upgrade to 8.04 on some recent install/upgrades. (Probably goofy-- I know.) These have worked fine via the upgrade-- still using 1.22-10 zoneminder. I am preparing a complete system today & tomorrow. I will try to install the latest Ubuntu and zoneminder to see if I get the same problem. Feel free to post back here and if I learn something new, I will post here-- not a new thread.

Ubuntu 8.10, Zoneminder 1.23.3-3, TrendNet TVIP-201P

Post by larrylamb »

In short, I configured this and it is working fine.

I downloaded the Ubuntu 8.10 64bit-AMD (kernel 2.6.27-9 generic) from University of Minnesota mirror. Burned the iso and loaded onto a white-box with ASUS M2N68-VM board with AMD Athlon 64X2 6000+ chip. Applied all Ubuntu updates. Used Synaptic to install Zoneminder 1.23.3 and all the other stuff that comes with it.

Changed the Apache port to 8888 and did everything listed in the Wiki>Documentation>Installing from a .deb. Not sure if I needed to do every step but I did what I always used to do. Changing the Apache port and configuring the NIC IPs is a little different with this version of Ubuntu/Gnome.

Pointed FireFox to localhost:8888/zm. Went to Options>Network>checked ...using Remote cameras.

Added a monitor: General tab set the name, type as remote, function as record, enabled is checked, linked is blank, max fps as 7, alarm as 7 and blend at default. (Set the max & alarm fps as desired.) Gives routine warning about the IP address which is solved next in Sources.

Source tab set remote name as user1:user1@10.10.10.1x, port as 80, path as /goform/capture, image as default, width as 320, height as 240, and checked (the new?) preserve aspect ratio. (The user1:user1 is the login and password you set on the TVIP201P camera when initially configured.)

The monitor line was added... waited about five seconds... clicked on the monitor I added and the image was there-- perfect. I checked the Linux system & message logs and there are no zoneminder errors and Capture/Process entries are as expected.

All I can say is that the old setting listed above for older Ubuntu and older Zoneminder still work in the new versions. I simply checked the preserve aspect box. Also noticed that the "local" in path for ffmpeg is corrected and I did not have to uncheck the "regular expression" check box on the Options>Network tab. Someone in the know may want to comment if I really needed to do the "fixes" in the wiki for a .deb.

The system has been running for over an hour without any problems-- but I cannot atest to what it will do in two days.

Added note

I am having a problem keeping the NIC IP addresses configured. It drops the saved values on a reboot. As of this moment, I am not pleased with the Network configuration screen in this version of Ubuntu.

Have you configured the cam to serve 640x480 images when you change the configuration in ZM?

Have you figured enough shared memory as described in the FAQ?

TrendNet 640x480

Post by larrylamb »

I have tested this and it does work under both zoneminder releases and both ubuntu releases. My simple observation is that 640x480 has a lot of data being pushed and if the frames per second on the camera(s) is/are above 7, and there are more than a couple of cameras, there seems to be a network "overload" (for lack of a better description) on the PC NIC. Although I do not use that pixel mode, I did buy motherboards with 1 Ghz NIC and install a second 1 Ghz NIC and the bus path to the drive and the drive are both 300MB/sec. I think that some users try to push the camera and zoneminder settings beyond what the hardware can handle for more than 3-4 cameras. As for the shared memory settings, I still follow the instructions in the wiki for .deb and those all seem to work (see my previous post in this thread). Also, the ubuntu network settings issue is a known bug in the latest release of ubuntu and ubuntu has some threads about making the settings manually. I would think that the "new and improved" network settings interface should be a priority to fix for ubuntu-- but that's just me thinking that network settings are important.
