Linux is rebooting

Hi, I'm using the livecd with a spectra8 capturecard. asus A7v133, Athlon 800mHz, 512 MB. I'm using the Bttv drivers of the Livecd.
When I start ZM after a while the computer is rebooting. I'm only have the spectra8 and a networkcard in my pci slot. In the agp a viper550 videocard. I changed already the pci-slots. No luck.
I think maybe it is an irq Problem. Otherwise maybe a problem with the spectra8?

Hi Ben,
I had the same problem with the Linux Media Labs high end card, similar motherboard and CPU. I would greatly appreciate it if you would update to a new kernel and see if it resolves the problem.
The kernel I am currently using is kernel-tmb-2.6.7-2.tmb.3mdk-1-1mdk.i586.rpm.
You can find it here:

Simply download it. and do "sudo rpm -ivh kernel-tmb...."
This kernel is a candidate for the upcoming livecd release, so testing it with this card would be a big help to all.

I experienced this problem several months ago when the livecd kernel was the latest. I no longer have the LML card. I resolved the problem at the time by using Mandrake 9.2 with a 2.4 kernel. If a kernel update does not fix the problem for you, I could send you a livecd built on MDK 9.2 that probably will.

Hi, i had these problem with 2 ASUS motherboards.

This is definitely a MEMORY PROBLEM.

YES, Asus is incompatible with some memory facturers. Update Your bios with asus flash utility (can be found in asus web site).

My problem went away when i changed my RAM memory for a SAMSUNG 256 MB DDR stick. DONT USE 2 sticks, as this is a problem in many asus boards too.

I had definitely discovered that this was a memory problem after SEND A MAIL TO ALAN COX, and he asked me to use memtest 86 (http://www.memtest86.com/), a WONDERFUL memory test system.

run it for 24 hours and then check if it has any errors. if so, change the stick and test it again.

when no errors reported by memtest 86, you will be happy.

Also, upgrade your kernel, (VERY recommended,but this is not REALLY necessary)

OK. I have 2 memory sticks of 250 MB installed indeed.. First I will remove one stick and after that I will upgrade the kernel.

I changed the kernel but still the pc is rebooting. Then I placed only one memory stick (250 MB) in the MB. STill rebooting..

go and use the memtest 86 ... what are you waiting ?

and about let only ONE STICK, the manufacturer IS IMPORTANT.

so upgrade your bios and change yours sticks for SAMSUNG ones
(worked for me)

The memory is testing for almost 23 hrs... I used the program memtest86. It already Pass 99% and the test 300% and still no errors..!! I let you know.. B/w.. Did you use thespectra8 too?

Update: My memory has no faults after the test. I have already 2 sticks of samsung memory.!!. I tried an other MB. Unfortunally it was an a7v133 (amd 1000 Hz) as well. It was still rebooting. With different memory stick(s) too.

Then I tried an other very old MB of Abit (lx6) with a old pentium 2.
It runs still without rebooting.

So I have to buy an other MB.

(Not asus).
What do I need for speed?.. I'm thinking about a celeron Intell. The server is running 24/7. ( 4-6 camera's, apache, ftp, samba, gameserver )
Any suggestion??

Well. PRETTY STRANGE.

you could even try to disable ACPI (and APM)

I use as default Asus a7v600-x for AMD processors WITH SAMSUNG MEMORY.

it has a good performance and 6 PCI slots.

But if you only need 4-6 cameras (i use 16). go and get a good PCCHIPS Mother Board. its very cheap, but dont have memory incompatibility problems. im making a default embeded system which uses one PCCHIPS motherboard that have 256 mb memory and a duron processor embeded in itself, for 4-8 cameras.

Truly, the good fact is that ZM is so well designed that it doesnt need an awesome processor support, and memory is aways good. (i run 24x7 with 16 cameras in 256 MB RAM and 256 MB swap , but swap is NEVER used)

So, if you need some cheap, GOOD, and for a few cameras, select one of that PCCHIPS board. you will not be disapointed.

Another thing, Celeron is very Bad. i really prefer a good Duron, or even a Athlon XP, which has double power than Celeron and is not so expensive.

AMD Really Rulez.

I'm running now de spectra8 on an old 450 PIII asus P2Bs and the same memory.. It keeps running no problem at all. Only A little slow when streaming. I will look for a PCChips MB..

It is an Asus Motherboard probleem..!!. I bought a new board from MSI.. Put the processor on it and it runs.. No problem anymore.. No Asus for me again.. Thanks guys
