Network cameras using ethernet over mains

Post by uxbod »

I would like to rig up a camera to monitor my garage but do not really want to spend out on setting up a wifi repeater etc. I have power to the garage so have thought about using the ethernet over mains adaptors. Has anybody used these and how did they perform ?

Sure. I use a Panasonic BL-C1 network camera over a pair of Solwise PL-85E Homeplugs without any problems.

I had previously tried a similar setup with wireless bridges and found the performance to be flaky at best.

I use them at three sites and they can be very effective in reducing wiring and costs. I have found it extra useful on one site where thick walls meant wireless was near to useless.

So far I've had some effectiveness but not universal. It does very much come down to the wiring involved, and - I think - the age of the consumer unit/fuseboard if you have to cross circuits. Within a single circuit it's very good - but even going from upstairs to downstairs in one property I had no success.

However - going about 200M across *TWO* other CU's elsewhere on the same site provided excellent results.

So - no guarantee and the only way to test if they'll work is to actually buy and try. I'm actually using one now for my laptop - better speed and reliability than wifi even though the signal is very good.
