is zoneminder better than conventional DVRs ?

I'm making some analysis about the performance, costs and reliability of zoneminder compared with conventional DVRs.

I don't have any experience with that appliances and also with zoneminder although I have read a lot about them.

I ask to you if zoneminder is better than DVR or even in some tasks.
Is the cost of a good zoneminder implementation higher than a similar DVR ?

Better in most. Missing some features, and a different look and feel from everything out there.

Cheaper. (Unless you get the real junk stand-alones)
