Night vision cameras

Post by noah35 »

Hello all,

Just wondering if there are any wireless IP cameras out there that have night vision capability, but does not necessarily carry onboard infrared LEDs? Basically, I'm looking for a camera that can switch to night vision using a sensor, but relies on an external IR source to illuminate the region of interest.

1. Which cameras, if any, would provide such functionality?

2. Are there any decent LED IR illuminators out there that can sense when to gradually increase infrared illumination as night falls? Something that has a wide angle of illumination (say 90 degrees). I'm looking at a price range of around $100-$200. But if you have suggestions that go beyond that price bracket, please feel free to mention it anyway.

Any feedback would be greatly appreciated.
Kind regards,

Noah

http://www.zoneminder.com/forums/viewtopic.php?t=13608 has night vision it does have onboard but they can be toggled off completely in the settings in the latest firmwares.

@coke: The area I would like to capture is my front yard primarily, which is around 10m x 8m. But I'd also like the illumination to reach slightly beyond that, i.e. on the footpath and on the road, and perhaps our neighbours on the other side of the road (cos they're some suspicious people). Basically, I would like to illuminate a rather wide area at the front yard of my home, estimating around 20m x 20m. I've considered buying 2 IR lamps, one on each side of the area, so there's ample lighting. I've looked into the RayMax 50 Fusion (http://www.rayled.com/images/range_matrix/index.html), and possibly buying a couple of those but they're quite expensive, at around $500 a pop I believe, or more if I'm mistaken. So I'm just looking if there are alternatives.

@mitch: I have already ordered the IP312W and was thinking of looking for one for the outdoors, i.e. for my front yard like I've explained to coke above. However, I cannot find one that has infrared capability without the LED's onboard. I really just wanted something cheaper than the IP312W but can't seem to find one of the same value. I may just buy another IP312W and accompany that with a couple of IR illuminators.

I need an IR illuminator that radiates light on the same wavelength as that of the infrared on the IP312W camera. This way the IP312W can detect the illumination.
Kind regards,

Noah

Well depends on what frame rate you need too. Some higher end cameras have dedicate night vision sides that actually increase exposure time, can work with very little illumination but still provide a very good picture. The problem is it will lower your FPS and longer exposure time means harder to catch very fast motion.

If you partnered one with a even mediocre IR illuminator id assume you would be very well off and get good fps + no blur.

They generally cost a good bit more than the IP312W but if you are looking at spending $1000 on IR illumination a camera that can work with a $50 IR sensor and give you better results for cheaper may be a better way to go:)
