Best OS, Most Compatible, Easiest with ZM?

Post by quietas »

I'm building several new systems with a Dell Studio Core2 Quad with 8gb RAM, 1x 320gb, and 2x 1tb drives. The server is planned to be headless and accessed remotely. I will have physical access, but web and SSH (maybe FeeeNX) LAN and VLAN remote access will be the primary method. My current boxes are Ubuntu 8 and 9 built from source.

What currently is the best supported OS for use with Zoneminder? Is there a distro which has frequently updated packages for easy maintenance and upgrades?

EDIT: BTW, the newer PV-981 PCI-Ex1 cards from Bluecherry seem to work great. I needed these since the Dell Studio systems only have 1 normal PCI, but they have 2 PCI-Ex1.

Sounds like you already have made up your mind, but Debian and Ubuntu are both fine.

I guess I'll run with Ubuntu 9.04 server. I am the most familiar with Ubuntu/Debian, but I do operate a RH 5.3 Zimbra mail server as well.

From a dev standpoint, is there a preferred OS for compatibility? From the package maintenance side, does any one flavor stand out as staying the most current?

You can try adding this line to your sources.list to install Peter Howard's Ubuntu version based on 1.24:

deb http://zoneminder.bluecherry.net jaunty main

apt-get update ; apt-get install zoneminder

Thanks for the info, I had not see a repo for ZM. Any idea what the update time is between version numbers, ie 1.24.1 to 1.24.2?

It depends on Peter Howard's free time. We currently do not maintain the packages.
