Would like to get involved - May I ask some basic questions?

I've been developing the marketing side first of new venture described at YouTube.com/user/WatchDogLogic
Firstly, I've never worked with video files and am confused of how one deals with the data processing side of these? We are all familiar with discrete records and fields, but 'where is the record' in a video file?
Is there a mentor type out there that I might ask a few of these simple questions?
I've been developing using Ruby on Rails for the last 3 years and am hoping to find a way to put the controller logic and views into this type of design.
