i just installed zoneminder on my ubuntu 9.04 greatly helped by the wiki http://www.zoneminder.com/wiki/index.ph ... _interface.
everything worked fine until i started the camera - black screen!
i am at a loss to find out whether my capture card is being recognised or not. i dont even know what card i have and not very familiar with how to find it out. how can i find out what card i have and whether it is compatible?

how to test hardware compatibility?
dmseg showed the following - a list of boards and numbers after the following paragraph.
Congratulations! Your TV card vendor saved a few
[ 9.840386] saa7134: cents for a eeprom, thus your pci board has no
[ 9.840387] saa7134: subsystem ID and I can't identify it automatically
[ 9.840389] saa7134: </rant>
[ 9.840389] saa7134: I feel better now. Ok, here are the good news:
[ 9.840391] saa7134: You can use the card=<nr> insmod option to specify
[ 9.840392] saa7134: which board do you have. The list:
the above paragraph was followed by the next
9.945156] saa7130[3]: subsystem: 1131:0000, board: UNKNOWN/GENERIC [card=0,autodetected]
[ 9.945173] saa7130[3]: board init: gpio is 10000
[ 10.048135] saa7130[3]: Huh, no eeprom present (err=-5)?
[ 10.048256] saa7130[3]: registered device video3 [v4l2]
[ 10.048335] saa7130[3]: registered device vbi3
[ 10.048367] saa7134 0000:02:08.0: PCI INT A -> GSI 17 (level, low) -> IRQ 17
[ 10.048375] saa7130[4]: found at 0000:02:08.0, rev: 1, irq: 17, latency: 32, mmio: 0xff7fec00
what does this all mean? i cant make out anything except that my card is not being recognised. guess i will have to physically varify the card. but what after that? i will still be left with the original problem. any suggestions?
thanks in advance

Try editing /etc/modprobe.d/modprobe.conf to set your card tipe.
There is a commandline that must be entered on that file depending on you card type. There is a list of card types on the wiki, and the instructions on how to make the changes, check it out.
Then, download XAWTV from synaptic to see if you can get the video from the cards there. Just then try again in zoneminder.
For example, i managed to make ubuntu 9.10 to recognize my "generic" cards and I can see the images on xawtv but not yet on zoneminder
