howto get zoneminder to relinquish camera when told?

i just posted another subject on how to disable a monitor remotely.

basically i want to do this so anytime i'm at the computer, i can use the camera for whatever i want and it's not alarming and creating tons of events that i don't need to know about.

how do i get zoneminder to relinquish control of a camera so other programs can use it? i thought disabling the monitor did it, it appears that i was wrong.
