Hardware specifications for 100 IP Wireless Câmeras

Post by danielareas »

Does any body know the configuration I need to install 100 wireless IP cameras in a apartment building? I need to know how much storage I need for 15 days with cameras recording events at 5 FPS. Which would be the best server configuration? Wihch would be the best router for the job? Is ZM able to take this quantity of Cameras?

Having had issues with wireless noise from other sources attempting 5 wireless ip cams in a building, I'd be truly amazed if you managed to get 100 of them working on any system.

Meanwhile, what resolution? Just checked one of my 640x480 jpegs, and it came in at 38737 bytes. Some will be more, some less, depends on compression & what not.

38737 bytes * 100 cameras * 5FPS * 60 seconds * 60 minutes * 24 hours / 1024(k) / 1024 (m) /1024 (g) = 1558.51 gigs a day. Multiply that by 15 for 23,377.66 gigs, or roughly 23 terabytes.

That doesn't take into account motion detection, which would drastically reduce the amount of space needed, but drastically increase the amount of processors needed (unless you get the cameras to do it).

Off the top of my head, I'd vote for at least 8 cores, probably 16, 8 gigs of ram, and some fast 23 terabytes of drive space, since you'll be writing 18.5 megs a second to them.
